Conventional Vs Nitrogen Reducing Septic Systems
In 2019 Suffolk County Department of Health Services revised their code for conventional septic installations, so all septic upgrades would require a septic tank and leaching pools based on the bedroom count in your house. In addition in 2017 they launched a new septic system called the Innovative Alternative Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems, this system is designed to reduce the nitrogen going into our ground water. They are like mini sewer treatment plant for your home. There currently is grant money through the county and state to help offset the cost of the installation of these systems.
Conventional Septic Tank and Leaching Pool Requirements
Septic Tank:
1000gal for a maximum of 3 bedrooms 1250gal for 4 bedrooms 1500gal for 5 bedrooms 1750gal for 6 bedrooms 2000gal for 7 bedrooms 2250gal for 8 bedrooms |
Leaching pool:
8'x12' or 10'x10' for up to 4 bedrooms 8'x16' or 10'x13' for up to 6 bedrooms 8'x19' or 10'x15' for up to 7 bedrooms 8'x22' or 10'x17' for up to 8 bedrooms |
Innovative Alternative Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems (IAOWTS)
Over 1.5 million people live in Suffolk County, New York, and over 360,000 homes in a 90 square mile area have conventional septic systems—typically a septic tank and a deep, leaching pool. Many homes built before 1973 do not even have a primary treatment septic tank, so their wastewater goes directly into the leaching pool with virtually no treatment before it meets the water table. Suffolk County has implemented the Innovative Alternative Onsite Treatment System to help reduce the nitrogen going into our ground water and protecting our waterways for the future. Suffolk County along with New York State is offering grant money to help offset the cost for the system installation. Please visit reclaimourwater.info to apply for the grant money. You can also contact Suffolk County department of health directly by emailing septicdemo@suffolkcountyny.gov with any questions.
Hydro-Action System
- Hydro-Action became the first IA/OWTS approved in Suffolk County, NY in September 2016. Hydro-Action's ATU had the best field data for Total Nitrogen removal at 12.43 mg/l demonstrating that higher costs do not always mean higher performance.
- Hydro-action is also the only company to eliminate the need for media filters, which eventually need to be replaced and can be ruined if unwanted food material such as fats, oils, and greases come in contact with the media, or if you use strong cleaning agents. Their technology relies only on suspended growth and recirculation between nitrification and denitrification in order to remove nitrogen.
- Hydro-Action technology utilizes an activated sludge treatment process, which constantly infuses oxygen to wastewater where aerobic bacteria metabolize the waste. Then it separates in a clarification chamber without the use of media filters, carbon additives, or expensive, high maintenance technologies.
- Hydro-Action offers their products in a three tank combination as a single unit: pretreatment, aerobic treatment, and pump tank design as the “Set-N-Go” unit.
- Hydro-Action also sells their tanks as individual treatment plants.
- Hydro-Action are NSF Standard 40 & 245 Nitrogen Reduction approved with testing results of an average CBOD5 of 4mg/L (98.5% reduction), TSS 9mg/L (95.25% reduction), and 5.1 mg/L dissolved oxygen.
- Their Nitrogen Reduction averaged less than 10mg/L TN and over 79% reduction in Total Nitrogen removal.
- As our partner in wastewater treatment systems, Hydro-Action is proud to offer you Hydro-Action’s best. A system of unprecedented quality that considers everything from delivery to environmental concerns.
Fuji System
Fuji clean offers the most cost effective and simple means of treating both residential and commercial wastewater. With no moving parts the system is easily serviced, Fuji Clean is one of the most reliable systems to operate and maintain. Additionally, with its compact size, and lightweight, watertight construction, Fuji Clean can fit on even the most difficult of sites. Your Fuji Clean treatment system is essentially your own personal wastewater treatment plant. Dirty “domestic” (i.e. household, from bathrooms, kitchen, sinks etc.) wastewater goes in and clean water comes out, which then flows into the environment, such as into a leach field. Designed to produce a consistent, high-quality treated effluent, your Fuji Clean treatment system is a living biological ecosystem that relies on billions of living microbes to consume the pollutants in wastewater. Oxygen is introduced to keep the microbes alive and healthy (hence the air blower) and various forms of high surface area plastic “media” are incorporated into the system to provide space for microbes to live and consume waste material. Advanced Wastewater Solutions is currently the only distributor for Fuji Clean on Long Island. Fuji Clean advanced wastewater treatment systems are the most popular on-site systems in the world with over 2 million installed and operating around the globe with over 50 years in the industry.
In an increasing number of environmentally sensitive areas around the U.S. scientists, citizens and lawmakers are focused on trying to reduce wastewater derived nitrogen pollution both to maintain a safe and healthy drinking water supply, and in surface water to minimize toxic algal blooms that can cause myriad problems for marine environments.
With proprietary process water continuous recirculation and exclusive Fuji Clean media specifically designed to facilitate the growth of nitrogen reducing bacteria, field testing in Suffolk County NY, Maryland, Virginia and Florida demonstrate that Fuji Clean CEN model systems deliver highest level nitrogen removal performance.
Lightweight, small footprint, one-tank systems are extremely maneuverable offering an ideal solution for tight, difficult sites. Highly energy efficient, easy to install, and with no moving parts inside tank, exceptionally easy to maintain, Fuji Clean technology is becoming the market leader in a growing number of nitrogen restricted regions.
